Israeli strikes target sites in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley as casualties rise and regional tensions spike amid ongoing conflict.
Lebanon’s eastern Bekaa Valley bore the toll of fresh Israeli strikes on Friday, with the Lebanese Health Ministry reporting at least 10 people killed and 24 wounded, including three children. Earlier in the day, two others were killed in a strike on a Palestinian refugee camp, adding to a day of deadly exchanges. Later, Lebanon said four more people died in another strike as Israel said it had targeted what it described as Hamas command centers in the Ein el-Hilweh camp near Sidon.
In a separate development, Hamas acknowledged that two of its members had been killed in the Sidon-area strike but dismissed the Israeli claim that the building housed a command center as a flimsy pretext. The military maneuvers come within a long-running, volatile pattern of cross-border skirmishes that have kept southern Lebanon on edge for years.
The day’s violence sits in the broader arc of a conflict that began with the Hamas-led attack on Israel in October 2023, which propelled Hezbollah to launch rockets from Lebanon in support of Hamas. Israel’s response has included airstrikes and shelling, pushing the region into a low‑level war that intensified in 2024. A U.S.-brokered ceasefire agreement later in 2024 slowed the fighting but did not end it, leaving tensions and the risk of renewed clashes high as combatants on both sides monitor each other closely.
Civilians in the affected areas continue to bear the brunt of the fighting, with evacuation warnings and ongoing firefighting and rescue efforts marking daily life for residents in and around the affected zones. International calls for restraint have grown as families grapple with loss and uncertainty about the next strike.
