Vivid Sydney Chaos: 89 Drones Plunge Into Darling Harbour Mid-Show

Imagine standing by the Sydney waterfront, looking up at a dazzling display of lights, only to see nearly 90 of them suddenly drop into the water. That is exactly what happened during Vivid Sydney’s “Star-Bound” aerial drone show at Darling Harbour. In a dramatic turn of events, 89 drones plummeted into Cockle Bay, leaving thousands of spectators in shock. Fortunately, despite the mid-air malfunction, no injuries were reported.

The operator behind the show, UK-based company Skymagic, explained that an “unforeseen change in the radio frequency environment” happened right after take-off. This unexpected interference messed with the fleet's positional accuracy. To prevent a bigger disaster, the drones hit a pre-set geofence boundary and automatically shut down to preserve safety. While 83 of the devices sank into the harbour, six others landed on the boardwalk area.

In the wake of the incident, organizers have hit the pause button. Four scheduled performances for Tuesday and Wednesday were cancelled as a precaution. A massive technical and safety review is currently underway to figure out exactly how to stop this from happening again.

Destination New South Wales chief executive Karen Jones issued a formal apology to the crowds who gathered to see the spectacle. While people were understandably disappointed, the priority remains the safety of everyone attending. As of now, it is still uncertain if the drone shows scheduled for the coming weekend will go ahead, as it all depends on the results of the investigation. For now, the Star-Bound show remains grounded while experts fish the high-tech equipment out of the bay.
