Gandhi charged that the Modi government had changed laws to give complete immunity to election commissioners for their rulings, and warned that the Congress would push to reverse such changes. To bolster his argument, he proposed concrete reforms: providing a machine-readable voter list to all parties at least a month before elections; rolling back rules that destroy CCTV footage after 45 days; granting equal access to electronic voting machines for all registered parties; and repealing the provision that lets election commissioners be shielded from accountability.
Calling the alleged vote chori an act against the country, Gandhi argued that destroying votes undermines the fabric of modern India and the idea of India itself. He questioned the transparency of appointments to the Election Commission, pointing to the removal of the Chief Justice of India from the selection panel and asking why the room where decisions are made yields so little space for the opposition voice.
While framing the issue as a fight for free and fair polls, he also claimed the RSS was trying to capture important national institutions, including intelligence and investigative bodies, to suppress opposition. The remarks underscored constitutional anxieties and set the stage for a charged, acrimonious debate in Parliament.
Supporters and critics alike will watch how the government and Parliament respond as the debate over electoral reforms intensifies, with the Opposition insisting on safeguards and transparency and the ruling party defending its electoral governance.
