Lola Young's Surprise Return Electrifies Reading Festival

Reading Festival attendees received an exhilarating surprise on the final day as acclaimed singer Lola Young made an unexpected appearance on the Grid stage. The artist, known for her powerful vocals, had teased her presence earlier on Instagram, telling fans,

I am backstage, the cat is out of the bag and I am going to be performing so see you... at the Grid stage.

Her set delighted the crowd with hits including her number one single "Messy" and "One Thing."

This surprise performance marks a significant step in Young's return to the spotlight after a period away from public performing. Last year, the singer had to cancel a series of shows following an on-stage collapse in September, which led her to take a break to "work on myself." She also withdrew from the 2025 Reading Festival due to an unavoidable scheduling conflict, further fueling anticipation for her return.

Young's journey back to the stage has been a deeply personal one. She openly discussed seeking treatment for drug dependency in 2025, telling a major newspaper that addiction had been a long-standing struggle. Her message to fans at the time expressed hope for a "second chance once I've had some time to work on myself and come back stronger."

True to her word, Young began a cautious return to performing earlier this year, starting with a small run of shows in the UK, including a London gig in March. While she expressed how "right" it felt to be back on stage, she also shared her commitment to taking things slowly, despite feeling ready for more.

Prior to her Reading appearance, she also graced the stage at the Electric Picnic Festival.

Her unexpected set at Reading, alongside performances from acts like drum and bass duo Chase & Status and Florence + The Machine, and Charli XCX's electrifying new era set, was warmly received by festival-goers. It not only showcased her enduring talent but also signaled a powerful and resilient comeback for an artist who has faced her challenges with honesty and courage.
