The App Funeral: Are AI Agents REALLY Killing Mobile Apps?
Photon just raised $4.5M, betting big that AI agents, not apps, are the future. Did they actually hold a funeral for mobile apps? Get ready for a paradigm shift!
Hold on to your app icons, folks, because the future of mobile might not involve them at all. One AI startup, Photon, is so convinced that agents are the next big thing, they literally held a funeral for mobile apps. Yes, a real, honest-to-goodness funeral in a church in San Francisco on September 17, complete with speeches and even a coffin for app icons!
This isn't just a publicity stunt, though it certainly grabs attention. Photon, which helps developers build AI agents that seamlessly integrate into platforms like iMessage and WhatsApp, just secured $4.5 million in seed funding. This boost comes after an incredible run, signing up over 40,000 developers and seeing its revenue skyrocket 10x in just four months.
The messaging volume?
A staggering 5x growth in the last month alone.
Photon co-founder and CEO Daniel Tian believes we're witnessing the end of an era. While acknowledging it will take time, he asserts, “Honestly, it's going to take a while, but I think, directionally, it's inevitable.” The core thesis is simple: users are tired of downloading new apps. They crave access to functionality directly within the messaging apps they already live in.
Think about it, instead of an app for every service, imagine an agent that handles everything through iMessage, WhatsApp, Telegram, SMS, or even email. This is precisely what Photon enables. They offer a powerful package of tools, including a unified API, an extensible channel framework, a command-line interface (CLI), and an observability suite.
These empower developers to build and operate agent experiences across a multitude of communication channels.
The idea for Photon was born from a common developer frustration: app discovery.
Co-founders Tian and Ryan Zhu realized that if they could build agents that worked inside iMessage, they could reach users where they already are. Their initial open-source bot, which let Tian's friends text him back through iMessage, attracted thousands of developers, a clear signal they were onto something huge.
While the open-source version still accounts for 98% of its use, Photon launched a managed platform this April. This hosted version boasts 99.95% uptime and is SOC 2 Type II and HIPAA-compliant, opening doors to critical use cases like healthcare.
Their client roster already includes names like Corgi Insurance, social app Boardy, Gen Z dating platform Ditto, and business banking platform Rho, alongside integration partners like Vercel and Nous Research.
With mobile app fatigue growing, and the power of AI agents becoming clearer, Photon's bold stance might not be so outlandish after all. Could your next interaction with a brand be through a chat, not an app icon? It seems increasingly likely.
We might just be living through the dawn of a new, agent-powered mobile paradigm.
