Trump Faces Historic Disapproval Ahead of Midterms: Polls Reveal "Record Hatred"

Former President Donald Trump is heading into the midterm elections with an unprecedented level of strong disapproval, according to recent polling analysis. A striking 50 percent of Americans now strongly disapprove of his job performance, a figure that surpasses even his own previous record set before the 2018 midterms. This puts him in a historically challenging position compared to past presidents facing a midterm election.

CNN's polling expert, Harry Enten, highlighted the depth of this sentiment, stating, “There's record hatred for the president of the United States going into a midterm.” This disapproval is particularly pronounced among independent voters, with 56 percent expressing strong negative feelings. Enten emphasized that this group often determines election outcomes, making their strong opposition a significant concern for Trump and his allies.

What makes this situation unique is not just the high disapproval, but also the relatively low level of strong approval. Trump's “strongly approve” rating stands at just 18 percent, significantly lower than the average 27 percent seen for previous presidents entering midterms.

This suggests a lack of the fervent support that has historically balanced out his strong critics, a dynamic Enten noted has changed.

Normally Trump is able to counteract that strong hatred with strong love, but not anymore,

he explained. Historically, midterms under a polarizing president can lead to significant shifts.

During Trump's first term in 2018, Democrats successfully flipped 41 seats to gain control of the House, despite Republicans adding to their Senate majority. Similarly, in 2006, then-President George W. Bush, facing a 41 percent strong disapproval rate, saw Democrats take control of both congressional chambers.

Current indicators suggest a challenging landscape for Republicans. The latest generic congressional ballot polling average shows Democrats with an 8.7 percent lead over Republicans.

This lead has grown throughout September, indicating a significant swing in public opinion.

The Cook Political Report has also shifted its forecast, now projecting Democrats are on track to gain control of the House, with 15 races moving in their favor. A key driver for this shift is reported voter dissatisfaction with Trump's handling of the economy. While Democrats currently hold 215 House seats and need only three more for a majority, the Senate race remains tightly contested.

The Republican advantage in the Senate is 53-47, and The Cook Political Report recently described it as a “true toss-up” after three key races shifted towards Democrats. The historic levels of disapproval surrounding Trump are undoubtedly a major factor as both parties brace for the upcoming election results.
