MP Police Orders Bhagavad Gita Sessions for Constable Training

Madhya Pradesh’s police training wing has directed all eight training schools to hold Bhagavad Gita recital sessions for recruits as part of their nine-month constable training. This follows the earlier move to have Ramcharitmanas read during training, and officials say the aim is to help trainees lead a righteous life and maintain discipline.

The directive comes from Additional Director General of Police (Training) Raja Babu Singh, who wrote to the superintendents of the eight training institutions. He suggested that, if possible, trainees read at least one chapter of the Bhagavad Gita just before their daily meditation session, aligning spiritual practice with the day’s discipline routines. The Gita is described by the ADG as an eternal scripture whose regular reading could guide the trainees toward better conduct and decision-making.

Around 4,000 young men and women are currently in the nine-month program at these facilities, which began in July. Officials noted that the initiative is part of a broader effort to instill core values and ethical behavior in new police personnel from the outset of their careers. The move to introduce scriptures into training has already sparked conversations beyond policing circles, with some political reactions noted in the public discourse.

Having previously initiated a campaign around reading the Ramcharitmanas, Singh’s approach reflects a history of integrating devotional texts into policing in the state. While supporters argue that such readings promote discipline and moral clarity, critics caution about maintaining secular neutrality in state institutions. The latest directive leaves room for centers to implement the sessions as they see fit within their routines, emphasizing a peaceful, reflective start to each day for trainees.
