Zelensky & European Leaders Boost Ukraine Defense Against Hypersonic Threat

In a critical late-night summit at Downing Street, European leaders joined Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to address the escalating conflict and Russia's use of advanced weaponry. Sir Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and leaders from Germany emphasized the "urgent need" to bolster Ukraine's defensive capabilities, particularly against Russia’s formidable hypersonic Oreshnik missiles.

The leaders also issued a strong call for an "immediate and complete ceasefire," proposing the current line of contact as the basis for any future negotiations. This renewed diplomatic pressure comes after President Zelensky's stark warning that Ukraine is prepared to continue its deep strikes into Russian territory if the war persists, asserting that his nation will not "silently die."

Russia has faced a series of military setbacks recently, but the conflict's devastating impact on Ukraine remains profound. The summit occurred just hours after a drone strike targeted a storage facility for spent nuclear fuel near the Chernobyl power plant, highlighting the ongoing threats.

Further military support for Ukraine and increased economic sanctions against Russia were also discussed. Earlier, President Zelensky had extended an offer for a face-to-face meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, an overture that has, so far, been rebuffed by Moscow.

The Oreshnik missile, which Russia reportedly deployed for the third time in the conflict during an assault on Kyiv in May, travels at an astounding Mach 10. Putin has previously claimed there are "currently no ways of counteracting this weapon." Ukraine's struggle with air defense shortages, partly due to US stocks being redirected or depleted by other conflicts, has left its civilian population particularly vulnerable to such ballistic missile attacks.
