Pennsylvania has sadly reported the first measles deaths in the United States this year, marking a tragic milestone and the state's first such fatalities in 35 years. Two unvaccinated residents of Lancaster County succumbed to the highly contagious disease, highlighting the severe risks associated with not receiving immunization.

This heartbreaking news comes amid a significant resurgence of measles across the U.S. in 2026. Health officials emphasize that these deaths, and the widespread suffering caused by measles, are entirely preventable. Dr. Paul Offit, an infectious disease expert at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, lamented the situation, stating, “all of this suffering and hospitalization and death is entirely preventable.

The measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine is a highly effective way to prevent measles, with two doses offering robust protection.

The majority of infections recorded are among those who are unvaccinated. This year alone, Pennsylvania has seen 393 confirmed measles cases, with 86 reported just in the past week.

Secretary of Health Dr. Debra Bogen noted that because measles was largely eliminated for decades, many people are unfamiliar with its potential severity.

Nationally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed a staggering 2,777 measles cases across 47 states and Washington D.C. in 2026, with most cases affecting children and teenagers.

There have been 36 new outbreaks of this highly contagious illness, accounting for the majority of these cases.

Neighboring Maryland has also declared measles outbreaks in three counties, reporting 31 cases, including 27 since mid-July, predominantly among unvaccinated residents. While no public exposures or widespread community transmission have been identified in Maryland yet, the proximity to Pennsylvania underscores the regional concern. This tragic development serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vaccination to protect public health.
