Grand Canyon Flash Flood Chaos: 1 Dead, 15 Still Missing

Significant flash floods have swept through parts of the Grand Canyon, leaving one person dead and 15 others still unaccounted for. The dramatic events unfolded on Saturday, starting around 2:30 p.m., inundating popular hiking areas like Bright Angel Canyon and Phantom Ranch. Park officials confirmed that the body of a 46-year-old man was recovered on Sunday evening near Crystal Rapids along the Colorado River.

While the initial count of missing persons was higher, authorities have now set the figure at 15.

The floods were powerful enough to dislodge large boulders into the Colorado River and critically, knocked out the sole water pipeline serving both tourists and residents in the affected areas.

Search and rescue operations are in full swing, with two helicopters from the National Park Service and the Arizona Department of Public Safety actively scanning the North Kaibab Trail and the Colorado River. According to Joelle Baird, a spokesperson for Grand Canyon National Park, those unaccounted for were either on backcountry itineraries or believed to be day hiking in the North Kaibab/Phantom Ranch vicinity.

The severe flooding in Bright Angel Creek, which feeds into the river, necessitated urgent evacuations.

More than 60 individuals have already been airlifted from the deep canyon areas, with additional evacuations planned from Cottonwood Campground and Phantom Ranch. The National Park Service has issued an active alert and is conducting an air evacuation of approximately 50 individuals from the Phantom Ranch area.

Authorities are urging anyone with information about hikers or campers who might still be in the affected zones to come forward and contact the park service. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable and powerful forces of nature that can transform even the most majestic landscapes into perilous environments.
