New Delhi eyes the latest breakthrough in the global fight against narcotics as the Central Bureau of Investigation announced the extradition of high-profile fugitive Prabhdeep Singh from Azerbaijan, a landmark in an international narcotics investigation. Singh was escorted back to India by a specialized three-member team from the Delhi Police and arrived in the capital on May 13, 2026. The operation showcased seamless collaboration among the Ministry of External Affairs, the Ministry of Home Affairs, and the Delhi Police, underscoring India's resolve to pursue drug traffickers beyond borders.
Singh is identified as the primary organizer of a large-scale narcotics syndicate that had been the focus of operations by the New Delhi Special Cell. The NDPS Act case led to the recovery of a substantial quantity of illegal drugs and the arrest of several co-conspirators, while Singh remained at large until his recent capture. After his detection and arrest in Baku, Indian authorities formalized the extradition through established legal channels.
As the National Central Bureau for INTERPOL in India, the CBI coordinated the return using the BHARATPOL network to manage the logistics. This development fits into a broader pattern, with officials noting that over 160 wanted criminals have been brought back to face justice in recent years, thanks to strengthened international law enforcement cooperation. Singh has been taken into custody to undergo further legal proceedings as authorities continue their investigation and prosecutions in India.
