Gatwick Profits PLUNGE Amid Iran War Travel Fallout! 📉

Gatwick Airport has announced a significant drop in its half-year profits and passenger numbers, largely attributing the decline to the ongoing impact of the Iran war on international travel. The West Sussex-based airport reported pre-tax profits of £136.5 million for the six months ending June 30, marking an 18% decrease from £166.2 million in the same period last year.

The airport saw 19.1 million passengers pass through its two terminals during the first half of the year, a 4.7% reduction compared to the previous year. Long-haul travel was particularly affected, experiencing a sharp 9.2% decline, primarily due to the conflict in the Middle East.

Short-haul passenger numbers also fell by 3.9%.

Airport officials noted that passenger demand was dampened by concerns over jet fuel supplies, though they stressed that no shortages have occurred to date. Additionally, the uncertainty stemming from the conflict has led travelers to book flights closer to their departure dates. This shift in booking patterns has prompted some low-cost airlines to scale back their flight schedules in response to the challenging market conditions.

In separate but related news, Gatwick recently received a boost for its future development plans.

A Court of Appeal ruling at the beginning of August cleared the way for the construction of the airport's second runway. The court dismissed an appeal by campaigners who sought to challenge a High Court ruling from June that had approved the £2.2 billion expansion project.

This decision paves the way for Gatwick, the UK's second busiest airport and one of the world's busiest single-runway airports, to proceed with its growth ambitions despite the current travel headwinds.
