Mumbai CNG Pumps Rush as Pipeline Damage Triggers Price Surge
CNG supply in Mumbai disrupted after third-party damage to GAIL's main pipeline inside the RCF compound, sparking long lines and rising ride costs.
Sunday afternoon disruption to GAIL's main gas pipeline inside the Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertiliser (RCF) compound hit CNG supply to Mumbai. Mahanagar Gas (MGL) said the City Gate Station at Wadala was affected, and CNG pumps across Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai may not operate.
With the shortage, long queues formed at pumps and several outlets remained shut as gas pressure remained low. Auto rickshaws, taxis and many buses that run on CNG felt the impact, and ride-hailers Ola and Uber reported price jumps as demand spiked.
Price increases were visible on aggregator platforms; a typical Mira Road to BKC trip jumped from around ₹400-₹450 to ₹550 and even crossed ₹600 at times on Sunday. Mumbai reportedly has around 130-140 CNG pumps, including those run by MGL.
Petrol Dealers Association officials noted many pumps have been non-functional since morning due to the gas supply shortfall. Officials say restoration of normal supply depends on stabilizing the gas pressure and repairing the pipeline damage.
