Madurai Metro Setback Sparks Political Clash Ahead of TN Polls
Union decision to return the Madurai-Coimbatore Metro proposal triggers political fallout, with business bodies urging renewed approval as Tamil Nadu heads to elections.
Industrial and business leaders in Tamil Nadu reacted with shock after the Union government returned the Metro Rail proposal for Madurai and Coimbatore. The Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry said the move could have a significant negative impact on the BJP and its ally AIADMK in the upcoming Legislative Assembly elections. In a statement, president N. Jagadeesan appealed to the central and state governments to push for renewed approval, noting that the reason cited—population below 20 lakh—overlooks how Madurai and southern districts actually use the network, with many people commuting to the High Court bench and to new facilities like the AIIMS hospital in Madurai.
Jagadeesan argued that the lack of coordination between the Centre and the state has delayed several essential infrastructure projects in southern districts. He pointed out that several northern cities with smaller populations have metro services already, suggesting a double standard in approvals. He urged a detailed DPR review and quick redress so the project can proceed if it serves public benefit.
Separately, political voices in Tamil Nadu accused the Centre of denying Metro projects on flimsy grounds. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin said the pattern of distributing metro projects—favoring BJP-ruled states with smaller tier II cities while depriving opposition-ruled states—was a troubling practice and demanded a clearer explanation.
Proponents in Coimbatore and Madurai have long argued that a metro would facilitate daily commutes, reduce congestion around major institutions, and support growth in the southern districts. Supporters assert that delays risk undermining long-term development plans and could affect the state’s ability to attract investment and connect with upcoming facilities.
