DK Shivakumar to Take Oath as Karnataka CM: Cabinet Formation Moves to Delhi
Karnataka prepares for DK Shivakumar’s swearing-in on June 3. Cabinet formation will happen in phases as leaders head to Delhi to finalize the list.
Karnataka is buzzing with political activity as the state prepares for a major leadership transition. Following a decisive nod from the Congress Legislature Party, D.K. Shivakumar is all set to take the oath as the next Chief Minister of Karnataka on Wednesday, June 3, 2026. This significant move marks a new chapter for the state, with outgoing Chief Minister Siddaramaiah also playing a pivotal role in the transition.
The focus has now shifted from local parleys to the national capital. Both D.K. Shivakumar and Siddaramaiah are expected to travel to Delhi on Monday to meet with the Congress central leadership. They will be carrying their lists of preferred candidates for cabinet berths, seeking the final stamp of approval from the high command.
In a move to ensure stability and careful selection, AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge has indicated that the cabinet formation will not happen all at once. Instead, it will be carried out in a phased manner. The plan is to induct an initial group of ministers—possibly eight to ten—during the swearing-in ceremony, followed by a second batch after a gap of fifteen days to a month. This strategy allows the leadership to balance various regional and community interests across the state.
Several prominent names are already doing the rounds for key positions. MB Patil, a significant Lingayat leader, and Priyank Kharge, a prominent Dalit leader, are being viewed as top contenders for the Deputy Chief Minister posts. There is also strong speculation regarding the entry of Siddaramaiah’s son, Yathindra, into the new cabinet.
D.K. Shivakumar, who has often credited his rise to his roots as a party worker, formally met with Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot at the Lok Bhavan to stake his claim to form the government. As the clock ticks down to Wednesday’s ceremony, all eyes remain on Delhi to see who will make the final cut for the new Karnataka administration.
