Tensions are brewing between India and Bangladesh, with Dhaka urging New Delhi to “expedite” the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. This sensitive matter was a key point of discussion during a meeting between Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, and Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Monday, August 10, 2026.
This high-level meeting came just days after a virtual press conference held by Ms. Hasina on August 5 in Delhi, where she publicly criticized Mr. Rahman’s government. Her remarks reportedly caused significant outrage in Dhaka, contributing to the current strain in bilateral ties. Following the meeting in Dhaka, Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman expressed feeling “somewhat reassured” by the conversation between Prime Minister Rahman and High Commissioner Trivedi.
Bangladesh remains firm on its stance, with the Prime Minister’s Deputy Press Secretary, Shahadat Shadhin, stating, “Bangladesh hopes that India will expedite the process of extraditing Sheikh Hasina.” The meeting, which took place at the Prime Minister’s Office in the Secretariat in Dhaka, also saw Prime Minister Rahman emphasize the importance of fostering a conducive environment to further advance India-Bangladesh bilateral relations.
Adding to the complexities, Prime Minister Rahman reiterated an earlier request for India to extradite individuals suspected of involvement in the assassination of youth leader Shaheed Osman Hadi in December 2025. Reports suggest these suspected killers may have fled to India. The Indian High Commission in Bangladesh stated that both sides “exchanged views on matters of mutual interest” to strengthen people-to-people connections and overall relations.
Meanwhile, the Indian government has clarified that it does not endorse the comments made by Sheikh Hasina at her press conference, a statement aimed at de-escalating diplomatic friction. This development underscores the delicate balance both nations are trying to maintain amidst these significant bilateral challenges.
