In a remarkable medical feat, doctors at NIMS Medicity in Thiruvananthapuram, Keralam, successfully removed a 1-kilogram mass of hair from the stomach and small intestine of a nine-year-old girl. Following the surgery, the young patient made a swift recovery, resumed normal eating habits, and has since been discharged, much to the relief of her family and the medical team. Dr. Nair explained that a trichobezoar, commonly referred to as a hairball, forms when individuals repeatedly pull out and swallow their own hair. Because hair is indigestible, it can gradually accumulate in the stomach, eventually forming a hard mass.

In severe cases, like this one, it can extend into the small intestine, causing a complete obstruction, a condition known as Rapunzel syndrome.

This particular syndrome is exceptionally rare, primarily affecting adolescent girls, with fewer than 100 cases ever reported globally.
