The investigation into the alleged embezzlement of donations at the revered Ram temple in Ayodhya has made significant progress, with police confirming that various aspects of the case have been thoroughly probed. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Ayodhya, Gaurav Grover, announced that the probe is on track to be completed within the 90-day deadline, with the chargesheet expected to be filed in court by the end of next month.
Speaking to reporters on Saturday, August 8, 2026, Mr. Grover clarified that while a Special Investigation Team (SIT) is involved, it is not conducting a separate investigation. Instead, it is coordinating with and advising the ongoing police probe. The SIT is chaired by Lucknow IGP Kiran S, who brings five years of valuable experience from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to the team. SSP Grover emphasized his continuous oversight of the investigation at the local level, offering guidance and ensuring its smooth progression.
The case originated from an FIR registered on June 25 at the Ram Janmabhoomi police station in Ayodhya. Following the registration, police have already arrested and sent eight accused individuals to jail. Among those implicated are former temple trust general secretary Champat Rai’s close aide Tinnu Yadav, counting in-charge Subhash Srivastava, Ramashankar Mishra, Manish Yadav, Karunesh, Lavkush Mishra, Anukalp, and Avinash Shukla. All eight individuals were taken into police remand for interrogation as part of the extensive inquiry.
The gravity of the situation also caught the attention of the Supreme Court. On July 27, the Uttar Pradesh government informed the apex court about the formation of a four-member SIT, headed by IGP Kiran S, to investigate the alleged fraud. Responding to this, the Supreme Court further directed the State Government to include a forensic auditor as the fifth member of the SIT, underscoring the need for a comprehensive and expert-driven examination of the financial irregularities. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also voiced his concern, stating that the Ram Temple embezzlement episode has deeply hurt the sentiments of devotees.
