A 27-year-old trainee veterinarian was killed by a pregnant hippopotamus during a routine check at Tyavarekoppa Tiger and Lion Safari in Shivamogga, Karnataka, prompting an official inquiry.
A trainee veterinarian died after being attacked by a hippopotamus at Tyavarekoppa Tiger and Lion Safari in Shivamogga district, Karnataka. The 27-year-old, Dr Sameeksha Reddy, had joined the wildlife facility on a contractual basis about six weeks earlier and was part of the safari's veterinary team. She went to the hippo enclosure around 11:45 pm on Thursday to monitor the pregnant animal's condition using a thermal camera. The hippo, which was not eating and was nearing its delivery, charged, and the doctor fell from a ladder, becoming trapped inside the enclosure. The attack lasted only seconds, and staff pulled her out and rushed her to a private hospital in Shivamogga. She suffered severe injuries and significant blood loss, and succumbed to her injuries early Friday morning around 6:30 am.
Forest officials said an inquiry has been ordered by the Forest Minister to examine lapses and ensure standard operating procedures are followed across zoos. A team of senior veterinarians and forest officers will conduct the investigation and submit a report within seven days. The minister also announced compensation to the family as per norms. The victim’s family has raised questions about the initial information provided regarding injuries, with later updates clarifying the extent of liver damage and other injuries.
The incident has sparked renewed attention on safety protocols for veterinary staff working with dangerous wildlife and the need for robust training and equipment to prevent such tragedies in the future. Authorities say they will review and tighten SOPs to safeguard staff while caring for animals inside enclosures.
