US Envoy Sergio Gor's Manipur Visit: Strengthening Ties & Boosting Tourism!

IMPHAL: US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, recently concluded a significant two-day visit to Manipur, fostering discussions on strengthening ties and exploring the state's potential. Accompanied by US Consul General in Kolkata, Kathy Giles-Diaz, Ambassador Gor engaged with key state leaders, including Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh and Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, alongside visiting historic landmarks.

During his visit, Ambassador Gor toured Kangla Fort, the ancient capital of the erstwhile Manipur kingdom, and Khwairamband Keithel, the renowned all-women-run market in the heart of Imphal. These visits highlighted the rich cultural heritage and unique social fabric of Manipur.

A key meeting took place on Friday evening, where Ambassador Gor met Chief Minister Khemchand Singh.

The Chief Minister expressed his pleasure on social media, stating, “It was a pleasure to meet the Ambassador of the United States to India, Sergio Gor, today. We had the opportunity to discuss relations between the US and Manipur.

I am confident that the engagement between the US and Manipur will strengthen in the years to come.” The Chief Minister's secretariat later released a statement indicating that Gor praised Manipur's natural beauty, calling it “a stunning place” and expressing happiness over Prime Minister Narendra Modi's focus on the development of the Northeast. Ambassador Gor also held a meeting with Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at Lok Bhavan in Imphal.

During this discussion, Gor reportedly emphasized the

special bond between PM Modi and US President Donald Trump, beyond the normal Prime minister-President relationship,

noting that “Trump personally cherished the relationship.” This highlights the strategic importance placed on the India-US partnership at the highest levels. In a forward-looking gesture, Chief Minister Khemchand invited Ambassador Gor to the upcoming Manipur Sangai Festival 2026, scheduled for late November.

He passionately described India as a “mini world” and Manipur as a “mini India,” proud of its diverse population of 36 communities.
