Alone, Not Lonely: Are Dating Apps ruining the idea of love and making Gen Z more isolated?

"Love", is often known as the most beautiful feeling in this world and what is more beautiful than experiencing it in your life? In the world of connectivity and technology, sometimes the most convenient way to find your ideal match is through dating apps. But as it says "The grass always looks greener on the other side". Just a swipe and you can find the love of your life but it is not as easy as it seems, it also comes with its cost.

Swiping left or right on dating apps may help you find love but it can also destroy your idea of love forever. Dating Apps like Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, etc provide you with a plethora of options but often it creates a paradox of choices: uncountable profiles yet fewer meaningful connections. This leads to more confusion and loneliness than love and satisfaction.

Dating apps are mere gamification where individuals are more focused on external appearance, number of matches, and instant gratification. The constant need to seek validation from some unknown individual on a virtual platform is one of the major reasons for today's rise in mental health issues. Instead of deeper bonds, repeated rejections, and shallow encounters intensify the issue of isolation more in this cutting-edge generation.

The ability to unmatch and stop responding to someone, in popular culture which is known as "ghosting" has become a normalized way of ending relationships. This lack of closure often leaves people questioning themselves. Repeatedly ghosted people may develop attachment issues, making them hesitant to trust new connections which leads them to avoid emotional vulnerability and start experiencing dating fatigue.

Dating apps often make them less confident, emotionally drained, and isolated from the world. That's why Gen Zs are known as the most connected yet the loneliest generation.

A study by YouGov and Smirnoff further reveals that nearly 47% of single Gen Zs prefer meeting potential partners in physical places, rather than online. This highlights that they are more interested in genuine and face-to-face connections. 🔗

I dislike the idea of love being ‘available’ right next door or just a click (or swipe) away. I think the beauty of love emerges when you’re patient with it, when you work for it and most importantly, love happens to you when you are not deliberately looking for it. I miss the unpredictability and the desire to be surprised. Dating apps make love too accessible and that makes people not take it seriously.

The game of swiping, matching, and unmatching has inadvertently become a game of feelings, leaving hope for the Gen Zs to redefine their love stories, in the modern times!
