Nepal Floods: Death Toll Nears 1,400, Thousands Still Missing

The devastating flash floods in Nepal have led to a tragic increase in the death toll, now reaching 1,399 as of Tuesday, September 15, 2026. Authorities continue to recover bodies from the eight affected districts, with rescue operations in full swing. The catastrophic floods, triggered by an ice-rock avalanche near the Nepal-Tibet border on August 26, have wreaked havoc across towns and villages in northern and central Nepal.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority has released grim statistics, showing the immense impact on various regions. Chitwan district has reported the highest number of casualties, with 364 bodies recovered.

This is followed by Nawalparasi East with 232, Nawalparasi West with 222, and Nuwakot with 202.

Other severely affected areas include Rasuwa, where 189 bodies were found, Gorkha with 78, Dhading with 72, and Tanahun with 38. Tragically, two additional lives were lost while victims were undergoing treatment in the capital city of Kathmandu. The joint command of security personnel is working tirelessly, continuing their crucial search and rescue efforts.

The situation remains critical, with an estimated 5,170 people still missing, intensifying the urgency of ongoing operations.

Despite the grim numbers, there's a ray of hope as officials confirm that a significant 13,742 individuals have been successfully rescued so far. In a display of regional cooperation, India has approved the expedited export of electricity to flood-hit Nepal, providing much-needed assistance during this difficult period.

Indian teams are also reportedly nearing the final stage of the Chilime tunnel rescue operation, highlighting the collaborative efforts to mitigate the disaster's impact.
