Currently, the country adds between 10 to 15 million new AC units every single year. With another 150 million units expected to be installed over the next decade, the electricity demand is skyrocketing. To put it in perspective, one single AC unit consumes as much electricity as 100 to 150 LED bulbs combined. During peak hours, cooling now accounts for nearly 25% of India's total power demand, a figure that is only set to rise.
A recent study highlights a potential solution that could save consumers a staggering ₹2.5 lakh crore ($25 billion). By doubling the energy efficiency of air conditioners over the next ten years, the country could avoid major power shortages. Without these upgrades, ACs alone could drive over 30% of the national peak power demand by 2035, leading to frequent blackouts or extremely expensive emergency repairs.
While the Bureau of Energy Efficiency is already planning to raise standards by 2028, experts suggest we need even more ambitious, long-term goals. The aim is to turn this cooling crisis into a win for everyone—manufacturers, the power grid, and most importantly, the average person's wallet. In the meantime, some relief is on the horizon as temperatures in major cities like Delhi are expected to dip slightly by the end of the week, offering a brief break from the intense heat.
