CBI Urges UK: Make AI Adoption a National Priority Now!

The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has issued a powerful call to action, urging the government to elevate Artificial Intelligence (AI) adoption to a national economic priority. According to the influential business group, the next 10 years must be designated as Britain's “adoption decade,” placing AI at the very core of the nation’s economic and workforce strategy. The CBI, in a report co-authored with Oliver Wyman, highlights the urgent need for companies to move beyond mere pilot projects and fully integrate AI into their operations, lest they be left behind in the rapidly advancing technological landscape.
Current data reveals a significant disparity in AI utilization across businesses. While a respectable 61% of UK firms report using AI, a closer look shows that only 46% of domestically focused businesses have adopted the technology, compared to 63% of those operating internationally. This “execution divide” is a critical concern, as firms that are successfully scaling up AI applications are significantly outperforming their counterparts. The research, which included contributions from the Oliver Wyman Forum and the New York Stock Exchange, indicates that almost half (49%) of leading AI adopters are meeting or even exceeding their expected return on investment, a stark contrast to just 15% of businesses lagging in AI rollout.
Rain Newton-Smith, the CBI chief executive, underscored the urgency of the situation, stating, “The next chapter of AI won’t just be defined by what we invent, but by how quickly we can put it to work at scale.” She emphasized that Britain must now treat AI adoption as a top national economic priority. Her vision is for the government and businesses to unite in a shared ambition: to position the UK as the world’s best place for responsible AI adoption, followed by a relentless focus on execution. This means moving decisively past experimental pilot programs and fully embedding AI into the fabric of the nation's economy.
The CBI’s plea is a clear signal that the UK stands at a critical juncture regarding its digital future. Without a concerted national effort to accelerate AI integration, there's a risk of diminished competitiveness and missed economic opportunities. The report serves as a wake-up call for both policymakers and businesses to collaborate and ensure that Britain not only invents cutting-edge AI but also masters its widespread, impactful application.
