OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has voiced strong disapproval regarding Anthropic’s recent move to engage religious scholars in discussions about AI consciousness. Altman, taking to X, stated that he is
very uncomfortable about people trying to ascribe religious force or a surrender of human judgment to AI models,
emphasizing his belief that “it is a real safety issue.”
This firm stance from the head of OpenAI comes in the wake of a New York Times report detailing Anthropic co-founder Chris Olah’s initiative. Olah reportedly hosted religious scholars and philosophers to explore the shaping of AI's morals and delve into the complex topic of machine consciousness for their model, Claude.
The debate isn't confined to Altman alone. Other tech giants, including Microsoft and Google DeepMind, have also reportedly pushed back against such approaches to AI development and ethics. Adding another dimension to the conversation, Pope Leo XIV has reportedly dismissed the concept of machine consciousness altogether, highlighting a significant divergence in perspectives on this evolving technological frontier.
Altman's comments are widely interpreted as a direct criticism of Anthropic, particularly given the past connection with its co-founder Dario Amodei, who previously worked alongside Altman at OpenAI.
The discussion underscores the growing ethical and philosophical challenges faced by the AI industry as models become increasingly sophisticated.
