TN Assembly Demands Lok Sabha Seats Freeze & Immediate Women's Quota!

The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly made a significant political statement on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, by passing a resolution that urges the Union government to maintain the existing 543 Lok Sabha seats. This resolution also calls for the current proportion of inter-State seat distribution to remain unchanged, sparking debate among various political factions.
A pivotal aspect of the resolution, championed by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, is its demand for the immediate implementation of a 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha. This quota would apply to the existing 543 seats, as well as in subsequent Assembly elections, without any delay, aiming for full realization by 2029. CM Vijay emphasized that this initiative reflects the concerns of women across the state, highlighting Tamil Nadu's rich history of distinguished women. "Reservation for women is not a concession. It is a matter of social justice and a constitutional right," Mr. Vijay declared during the assembly session.
The Chief Minister underscored the importance of equal status for women, who comprise nearly half of India's population, across all levels of governance. He pointed out that while voter turnout among women in Tamil Nadu often surpasses that of men, their political representation has historically lagged. Vijay noted that in the previous Assembly, only 12 out of 234 MLAs were women, a number that has since increased to 23. Despite this increase, the percentage share of women representatives in the Assembly has not seen a significant rise, reinforcing the urgent need for robust affirmative action.
This resolution comes in the context of the 106th Constitutional Amendment Act, passed by Parliament in 2023, which provides for a one-third reservation of seats for women in the Lok Sabha and all State Legislative Assemblies. However, the Centre had indicated that this Act would only come into effect at a later stage. Tamil Nadu's resolution directly challenges this timeline, advocating for the reservation to be based on the current Lok Sabha configuration and to be implemented without delay.
While the resolution garnered support from several parties, including the DMK, it faced opposition from others. The AIADMK, PMK, DMDK, and BJP voiced their disagreement, leading to a noticeable divide within the legislative body on this critical issue. The Assembly also reiterated its stance on maintaining the current Lok Sabha-Rajya Sabha ratio of 2.2:1 as part of its comprehensive demand for electoral stability and equitable representation.
This move by the Tamil Nadu Assembly, spearheaded by CM Vijay, signals a strong push from the state for electoral reform and gender equality, potentially setting a precedent for other states and intensifying the national conversation on women's political empowerment and parliamentary delimitation.
