The Indian Navy has successfully thwarted a piracy attempt on an India-bound merchant vessel, MV Golden Arsenal, in the treacherous waters of the Gulf of Aden. The swift and decisive action by the guided-missile Talwar-class frigate INS Trikand and its elite Marine Commandos (Marcos) ensured the safety of the crew and the vessel.
The incident unfolded on Wednesday night when the merchant vessel, carrying 21 crew members including one Indian national, reported an attempted pirate attack approximately 300 nautical miles east-northeast of Djibouti. The crew, demonstrating remarkable presence of mind, immediately took refuge in the ship's citadel – a fortified safe room within the vessel – ensuring their safety despite damage to the bridge superstructure and adjoining compartments.
Upon receiving the distress call, coordinated through the Information Fusion Centre – Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR), INS Trikand, which was already on a mission deployment in the region, was directed to intercept MV Golden Arsenal. The Navy wasted no time, deploying a boarding team from INS Trikand to sanitize the vessel and assess the situation.
On Thursday morning, the Marcos boarded MV Golden Arsenal. A thorough search of the ship confirmed that no suspicious personnel were present. Following this, the crew safely emerged from the citadel and, alongside Indian Navy personnel, began assessing the vessel's condition. To further bolster the operation and provide comprehensive maritime domain awareness, an Indian Navy P-8I maritime patrol aircraft was deployed for aerial surveillance and reconnaissance.
This incident underscores the Indian Navy's unwavering commitment to maritime security in the region and its crucial role in safeguarding international shipping lanes. This isn't an isolated event; just last month on June 19, INS Trikand also responded to a distress call from MV Fareeda 5 regarding a likely piracy attempt in the Western Indian Ocean, taking prompt action to investigate and deter it. These continuous efforts ensure the safe passage of merchant vessels, particularly those vital for India's trade and economy, through high-risk areas.
