Twelve fall ill after consuming milk from a single vendor; eight suffer acute kidney issues as investigations unfold across Andhra Pradesh.
Four elderly persons have died in the past 48 hours from acute renal failure after consuming adulterated milk in Rajahmundry. Twelve people, including the deceased, had fallen ill after drinking milk supplied by the same vendor, Addala Ganeswara Rao. Eight victims are undergoing treatment for anuria, with three among them children below four years and in critical condition. Doctors said the age groups 50-70 and those under five are particularly vulnerable.
Blood samples from 73 families who consumed the vendor’s milk have been collected, and fodder given to cattle is also being tested. The dairy supply chain involved 46 dairy farmers and deliveries to 106 families. The vendor has been detained for interrogation as investigators seek to map out how the contamination occurred. Post-mortem reports are awaited to confirm the exact cause of death and renal failure.
An expert state-level team has collected and is testing samples, with blood drawn from the affected families sent for forensic analysis. The victims’ samples have been sent to Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam for advanced testing. In a show of support, the Chief Minister announced an ex-gratia of ₹10 lakh for each family of the dead. Authorities are urging caution and promising tighter monitoring of the dairy supply chain to prevent a repeat of such tragedy.
