Following a pilot's alert on a London-Bengaluru flight, Indian aviation safety officials are heading to Seattle to test a Boeing 787 fuel switch as a precautionary measure.
A routine flight from London to Bengaluru has sparked a major safety review for Air India’s Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is preparing to send a team of experts to Boeing's manufacturing facility in Seattle. Their mission is to observe the testing of a fuel control switch panel that was flagged by a pilot earlier this year.
The issue surfaced back in February during a flight with over 200 passengers on board. After landing safely in Bengaluru, the pilot in command noted a potential defect in the aircraft’s logbook regarding the fuel control switch latch. While the aircraft was grounded for inspection, Air India immediately ordered a precautionary fleet-wide check of its Boeing 787s to ensure everything was in order across the board.
According to officials, the specific module has already been checked by both the regulator and the manufacturer, with initial findings confirming it is fully functional. However, the decision to take the component to a laboratory environment in the United States is being described as a move of abundant caution. This additional step involves an examination in a controlled setting to definitively confirm the performance and integrity of the switch.
This heightened level of scrutiny comes at a sensitive time. Indian aviation authorities are adopting a very cautious approach following a tragic Boeing 787 crash in Gujarat last June, which resulted in the loss of 260 lives. In that investigation, the fuel control switches were a significant point of interest for safety experts.
For now, the DGCA team will act as observers in Seattle while technicians conduct the detailed laboratory checks. While preliminary inspections haven't found any major faults, the goal is to provide a conclusive evaluation to maintain the highest safety standards for the millions of passengers who fly the Dreamliner every year.
