Kerala Battles Pesticides: Major Push for Organic Farming & School Initiatives!

Kerala is embarking on a significant journey towards organic farming, a move largely prompted by alarming findings of pesticide residues in common food items. Agriculture Minister T. Siddique announced this ambitious initiative, highlighting the government's resolve to ensure food safety for its citizens. Tests conducted in government labs across the state, including those at Vellayani College of Agriculture and Mannuthy Agricultural University, revealed excessive pesticide levels in 58 out of 1,262 food samples.
The Minister emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that the discovery of "toxins-laden vegetables" reaching people's homes has solidified the government's commitment to transition back to organic methods. A core part of this strategy involves encouraging every household to transform their homes into small farming units, fostering a community-wide shift.
A flagship program, named "Kathir," is set to roll out in 500 schools this year. This initiative aims to ignite an interest in farming among students and educate them on scientific organic cultivation techniques. Each participating school will receive ₹10,000 to support their organic farming endeavors. The program is meticulously planned, complete with a nodal officer, a backup committee, and established marketing channels to guarantee its smooth operation and sustainability.
Minister Siddique also shared plans to expand the Kathir clubs to all government schools statewide by next year. To further incentivize student participation, the government is considering awarding academic weightage for involvement in Kathir club activities, a proposal that has received positive feedback from the Education department.
Beyond school initiatives, the government is also focused on market intervention to ensure fresh, safe produce is accessible. Through the Vegetable and Fruits Promotion Council of Kerala (VFPCK) and Horticorp, plans are underway to establish 2,000 vegetable markets specifically for the upcoming Onam festival. A substantial amount of ₹10.5 crore has been earmarked for this market intervention strategy, reinforcing Kerala's comprehensive approach to promoting organic farming and safeguarding public health.
