Delhi woke up to a deluge on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, as heavy showers lashed the national capital, transforming streets into rivers and bringing life to a near standstill. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) initially issued a yellow alert, upgrading it to orange, and even red in certain parts, forecasting moderate to intense rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds for the coming hours.
Commuters faced a nightmare scenario with waterlogged roads, knee-deep flooding in bustling markets, and bumper-to-bumper traffic across the city. Key areas such as Connaught Place, Janpath, Lutyens’ Delhi, Bharat Mandapam Road, Barakhamba Road, Mathura Road near ITO, and Kalindi Kunj were particularly affected by the relentless downpour.
A dramatic scene unfolded in Sadar Bazar, one of Delhi’s largest wholesale markets, where rainwater reportedly rose to waist-level. Aam Aadmi Party leader Saurabh Bharadwaj shared a video highlighting the plight of schoolchildren, office-goers, and shoppers wading through the submerged streets. Meanwhile, PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh shared a contrasting video on X, showing smooth traffic flow on Minto Bridge, aiming to reassure the public that efforts were underway to manage the monsoon's impact.
While the heavy rainfall helped wipe out the July deficit, the overall monsoon across the region still lags by 16%. The IMD predicts a continuation of rainfall into the night, with moderate showers expected on Wednesday and light precipitation in the days ahead, promising a dip in maximum temperatures. Residents are advised to exercise caution and stay updated on weather advisories.
