PM Modi in UAE seals pacts on strategic oil reserves and LPG for India's energy security
Experts hail MOUs on strategic petroleum reserves and LPG supply as game-changing for India's energy security, while UAE investment deepens ties.
During PM Narendra Modi's visit to the UAE, two major MOUs were signed to boost India's energy security: agreements to build strategic petroleum reserves and to secure long-term LPG and LNG supplies. With India importing about 90% of its crude, these arrangements come as a shield against disruptions from geopolitics, shipping chokepoints, and price volatility highlighted by the ongoing US-Iran tensions and the Strait of Hormuz.
Officials say the UAE-India talks extended beyond energy, with deals across defense, infrastructure, shipping and advanced technology, reinforcing the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Modi described the package as a new push for collaboration, with UAE announcing investments worth $5 billion to deepen economic links.
Analysts note that UAE's role as a top crude supplier and its proximity allows quick oil flows, while the capability to store oil in UAE and in India could cushion supply shocks. UAE's reorientation away from OPEC+ arrangements may also benefit India by stabilizing production. Market trackers like Kpler show India’s UAE crude imports recouping pre-conflict levels in late April and May, signaling close coordination despite volatile markets.
While the MOUs mark a strategic win for energy security, experts caution that delivery timelines, financing, and implementation will determine the real-world impact. Still, energy security, diversified supply lines, and a robust strategic partnership appear set to guide India-UAE ties in the years ahead.
