While biology undoubtedly plays a role, Dr. Goyal suggests that environmental influences are equally significant. "Many people grow up in environments where sports tracks, running tracks, and even crowd movement patterns often favour anticlockwise motion," she points out. Think about it: most competitive running events go counter-clockwise. These repeated, subtle experiences can strongly reinforce a preference over time, effectively programming our natural gait. So, what might seem like an innate preference could actually be a deeply ingrained habit.
But what if this natural drift turns into something more pronounced? While a slight left-turn bias is typically harmless, a noticeable and involuntary drift to one side can sometimes signal an underlying health issue. Dr. Goyal cautions, "Several neurological disorders can affect directional movement." We're talking about conditions involving the inner ear balance system, a stroke, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and certain cerebellar disorders. These conditions can disrupt the intricate communication network between our brain, inner ear, eyes, muscles, and joints – the very system responsible for maintaining our balance and spatial orientation. When any part of this network falters, our gait can be profoundly altered.
It's not always neurological, either. Musculoskeletal conditions can also influence our walking patterns. Dr. Goyal explains, "Unequal leg length, arthritis, chronic hip or knee pain, and spinal alignment issues can change the way a person walks," potentially leading to a consistent drift.
