Delhi is taking a significant leap towards ensuring safer and more convenient travel for women with the launch of 56 special "Ladies Only" e-buses. Lieutenant-Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta jointly flagged off these dedicated services from the Delhi University Sports Complex on Wednesday, marking a major step in women's safety initiatives.
The new fleet includes 30 buses for 15 high-demand routes across the city and an additional 26 buses specifically for 13 University-specific routes, directly benefiting female students. These buses will operate during the crucial morning and evening peak hours, connecting key institutional hubs like Nehru Place, AIIMS, Connaught Place, ITO, Karol Bagh, and Kashmere Gate, as well as areas around prominent Delhi University colleges.
The move comes after comprehensive review meetings on women's safety, where the Lieutenant-Governor emphasized the need for such dedicated services.
A standout feature of these special buses is the deployment of women police personnel and Home Guards onboard, along with female staff operating the services.
This ensures a secure and comfortable environment for all passengers.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta highlighted that these services are equipped with security arrangements and women conductors, aiming to provide safe and dignified travel for women and female students.
She specifically noted the benefit for Delhi University students, offering them safe transport between their colleges and major residential areas.
Safety is further enhanced with the installation of panic buttons in each bus.
These buttons are directly integrated with the Delhi Police's 112 PCR emergency response system.
This advanced integration means that alerts can quickly reach the emergency system, guaranteeing a faster and more effective response in critical situations.
Beyond the ladies' special buses, the event also saw the flagging off of 200 new electric buses for the city's general fleet, a step towards sustainable public transport. Additionally, the Delhi-Karnal e-bus service was launched, expanding inter-city electric connectivity, and an electric vehicle (EV) charging station was inaugurated at Rajghat Depot-1, supporting the city's growing EV infrastructure.
These combined efforts underscore Delhi's commitment to modernizing its public transport system, prioritizing safety, and embracing environmentally friendly solutions.
