Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani has announced an ambitious plan to invest over ₹1 lakh crore in West Bengal by the year 2035. This massive investment aims to boost various sectors across the state, promising significant economic growth and job creation. The announcement was made during a gathering after Adani laid the foundation for a new 2,000-bed hospital in New Town, near Kolkata, alongside Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.
The multi-speciality 'Adani Arogya Mandir' hospital project alone is slated to cost ₹4,000 crore and is expected to create 10,000 jobs. Highlighting the group's commitment to social welfare, Mr. Adani stated that half of the hospital beds would be reserved for economically weaker sections, eligible under existing state and central health insurance schemes.
The facility will also incorporate a medical college, along with advanced research and care infrastructure, ensuring comprehensive healthcare services.
Beyond healthcare, the Adani Group's investment blueprint for West Bengal is expansive.
It encompasses critical areas such as ports, logistics, power generation, power transmission, and distribution. Notably, this marks the first formal indication of the Adani Group's intention to enter the power distribution sector in Kolkata and Howrah, an area traditionally monopolized by the R.P.
Sanjiv Goenka Group's CESC Ltd. The plan also includes significant ventures in roads, bridges, ropeways, green cement, and hyperscale data centres.
Mr. Adani articulated the strategic vision behind this infrastructure push, explaining how ports strengthen logistics, which in turn attracts industry. This industry then drives manufacturing, which demands energy, and energy, finally, enables digital infrastructure. This interconnected chain, he noted, leads to a multiplication of jobs.
He further emphasized West Bengal's unique position as India's natural maritime and logistics bridge to Northeast India and Southeast Asia, asserting its potential to evolve into "one of Asia's greatest integrated industrial and economic platforms."
In a gesture of cultural and heritage support, the Adani Group also pledged assistance for the restoration of the iconic Writers' Building, the revitalization of Kumartuli Ghat, and initiatives to globally showcase Kolkata's renowned Durga Puja.
Reflecting on the significance of this venture, Mr.
Adani likened West Bengal to potentially becoming the group's 'second karmabhoomi' (land where one works), following Mundra Port in Gujarat.
He expressed his hope that West Bengal's awakening and progress would contribute significantly to "India's momentum."
