Ditch the plastic! Our writer tests Tripulse Pro Tencel leggings – a revolutionary, lower-impact alternative made from wood pulp. Is this the future of sustainable activewear?
It's time to seriously reconsider our sportswear choices, especially those laden with plastic. Many athletic garments, while functional, contribute to microplastic pollution. Our reporter embarked on a three-month journey to test various lower-impact alternatives for women, focusing on natural, recycled, and bio-based materials.
Among the items put through their paces were the Tripulse Pro Tencel leggings, priced at £149. These leggings stood out for their exceptional feel, described as more "second-skin" than "skin-tight." This comfort is attributed to their primary material: 86% Tencel. Tencel is an innovative fiber derived from wood pulp, known for its smooth texture, strength, and breathability. It's also a more environmentally conscious choice compared to viscose, requiring less carbon and water during production.
The leggings also incorporate 14% recycled elastane, which provides the necessary stretch for dynamic movement. However, it's worth noting that the presence of recycled elastane means these leggings may still shed microplastics during washing. Despite this, they proved incredibly versatile, performing well across a range of activities including yoga, gym workouts, and both outdoor and treadmill running.
Our reporter found that the leggings maintained their comfort and stretch even after multiple washes and didn't sag. Their design is pared-back and flattering, featuring a clever internal "pocket" within the waistband. While ideal for keys, fitting a phone proved a bit too snug. At £149, they are positioned as an investment piece within the sustainable sportswear market, offering a blend of performance, comfort, and a significantly lower environmental footprint.
