No Forced Eviction for Delhi Gymkhana: Centre Gives Iconic Club Time to Move

The iconic Delhi Gymkhana Club, a fixture of the capital's social life for over a century, has found a temporary breathing space in its ongoing legal battle with the Central government. In a recent hearing at the Delhi High Court, the Centre clarified that it does not intend to 'forcibly vacate' the premises or have the police rush in to take possession. Instead, the government has provided the club with an opportunity to hand over the land on its own terms, following the due process of law.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the court that any eviction would be carried out strictly according to legal procedures. While the government had initially set a deadline of June 5 for the club to vacate its 27.3-acre Lutyens' Delhi premises, it assured the court that no immediate coercive action would be taken without prior notice. This statement came after the club sought a stay on the eviction notice, which cited that the massive land parcel is required for 'strengthening and securing defence infrastructure.'

Established in 1913, the Delhi Gymkhana Club is much more than just a piece of real estate to its members; it is viewed as one of the capital's oldest and most significant sporting and social institutions. The heritage value of the site has been a central point of discussion, with supporters arguing that its closure could impact the city's global image. However, the High Court declined to immediately restrain the Centre, noting the government's commitment to following the legal path.

In a related development, the legal pressure on Lutyens' landmarks continues to mount. The High Court also recently set aside a stay on eviction proceedings against the Delhi Race Club, signaling a broader push by the government to reclaim prime land in the heart of the city. For now, the gates of the Gymkhana remain open, but the clock is ticking as the legal process moves forward.
