A closer look at Android 17's security, privacy upgrades, and Google's AI-powered Googlebook laptop announced at Android Show 2026.
At The Android Show: I/O Edition 2026, Google outlined Android 17, a major security and privacy upgrade set to roll out in 2026. Highlights include verified banking call protection to block spoofed scam calls from financial institutions, and Live Threat Detection using on-device AI to spot suspicious app behavior in real time. The update strengthens theft protection with biometric locking for lost devices, better PIN protection, and anti-theft features enabled by default. It also adds privacy upgrades such as temporary location sharing, clearer location-use indicators, and a new contact picker that limits app access to selected contacts.
Google also talked about OS verification, stronger AI privacy safeguards, and enhanced protections against malware, fake apps, and OTP theft.
In parallel, Google revealed Googlebook, a Gemini-powered AI-first laptop category designed to go beyond Chromebooks. It promises deep integration with Android phones so users can access mobile apps and files on the laptop without downloads. Features include Magic Pointer, an AI-enhanced cursor offering contextual suggestions and actions on screen; and Create your widget, which lets users build custom dashboards through prompts and connected Google apps like Gmail and Calendar. The laptop is being developed with partners like Acer and ASU.
Together, these announcements underscore Google's push to unify mobile, desktop, and AI capabilities, aiming to deliver proactive assistance across devices.
