Two Punjabi Students Killed in Targeted Edmonton Shooting After Party

A targeted shooting in Edmonton has claimed the lives of Gurdeep Singh, 27, of Bareh, and Ranveer Singh, 19, two Punjabi students who had come to Canada to study. Gurdeep had been in Canada for about two-and-a-half years, had completed his studies and was awaiting a work permit; he had married in 2020. Ranveer had only recently moved here to continue his studies.

The incident unfolded shortly after 10 pm on December 12, when a party at a first-floor apartment ended and a group of nearly a dozen friends began to disperse. As two cars drove away, unidentified assailants opened fire on Ranveer's vehicle, with Gurdeep in the passenger seat, and fled.

Ranveer Singh died at the scene, while Gurdeep Singh appeared to be injured and ultimately died after CPR was attempted; his family describes the harrowing moment as told to a relative who witnessed the aftermath. Police arrived quickly and detained all ten friends present, later releasing them as investigators continued. A post-mortem was scheduled for December 16, with further inquiries planned for December 17 when some friends are expected to return for questioning.

Investigators described the attack as targeted and said they are searching for a dark-coloured SUV that may have been involved. They are appealing for dash-camera or security footage captured around the time of the incident to help piece together what happened.

Back home in Punjab, families in the Budhlada sub-division of Mansa mourn the loss of two young men who had come to Canada chasing education and opportunity. The shooting has stunned the Punjabi community and raised questions about safety for international students in Canadian cities.
