A tragic building collapse in Delhi’s Saidulajab has left one dead and many injured. CM Rekha Gupta orders a probe into illegal constructions as rescue efforts continue.
A horrific incident unfolded in south Delhi’s Saidulajab area near the Saket Metro Station on Saturday evening when a four-storey building suddenly collapsed. The structure, which housed a mess and paying guest accommodation, crumbled into a heap of debris, leaving one person dead and at least eight others injured. Witnesses described a scene of absolute chaos, saying all they could hear were the screams of those trapped inside.
Rescue operations were launched immediately as several people remained missing under the rubble, including a woman who managed the kitchen canteen. Amid the confusion and anxiety, crowds gathered near the site, desperately searching for news about their friends and relatives who were believed to be inside at the time of the disaster.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta visited the site on Sunday to meet with affected families and offer her condolences. She has officially ordered a magisterial inquiry into the collapse and promised strict action against any unauthorized construction. The CM also directed officials to conduct an immediate survey and inspection of dilapidated and illegal buildings in Saidulajab and nearby areas to prevent further tragedies.
The incident has sparked a heated political row in the capital. The AAP has alleged that the BJP-ruled MCD ignored complaints from neighbors and even misled the High Court regarding the building's status. AAP Delhi president Saurabh Bharadwaj claimed that despite a writ being filed against the dangerously leaning structure, officials falsely claimed no construction was happening. A month later, the building collapsed.
While two junior-level officers have been suspended, opposition leaders argue this isn't enough, calling for the MCD Mayor’s resignation on moral grounds. As the investigation continues, the Delhi government has assured victims of full financial and administrative support, vowing to hold accountable any officials found guilty of protecting illegal structures or failing to discharge their duties properly.
