Hermès is currently in a fascinating transitional period for its menswear, bridging the gap between the celebrated tenure of departing artistic director Véronique Nichanian and the highly anticipated arrival of Grace Wales Bonner. This Spring 2027 collection serves as a refined interlude, a moment for the house to regroup while still celebrating the sophisticated essence Nichanian so expertly cultivated.
The collection, a studio-designed presentation, deeply echoes Nichanian’s signature style. It continues her tradition of creating clothing where fabrication is as rarefied as its image is aspirationally accessible, appealing to a vision of urbane and stylish men. Getting an up-close look at the pieces, the masterful craftsmanship was immediately evident, making my own collar pretty hot, as the saying goes.
A striking detail was the polkadot perforations on one beautiful tan calfskin jacket, a direct nod to the house’s Mangeoire bag, which itself draws inspiration from traditional horse nosebags. This unique motif added a touch of heritage and playful elegance to the luxurious leather piece.
The collection showcased an impressive array of leather, a hallmark of Hermès. Highlights included a technically stunning lilac leather T-shirt with a perforated laser-print illustration and a distinctive sweatshirt-style V-stitch at the neck. There was also a stupendous gray leather aloha shirt and the almost-obligatory leather five-pocket pants, all demonstrating exceptional skill in leather manipulation. Other standout leather items included a gorgeous black bomber with basketball-inspired topstitching, and a high-collared, shaved calfskin zip-up blouson that truly looked built for a "real and rowdy life", which was a personal favorite.
Beyond leather, the collection featured ingeniously constructed high-rise pants in materials like serge, drill, and gabardine. Their poetic pleating, sometimes spiced up with combat-adjacent patch pockets, offered both sophistication and a contemporary edge. Minimally structured parkas incorporated leather sections framed by ripstop, blending functionality with luxury. This collection beautifully reinforces Hermès' commitment to exquisite materials and timeless, yet forward-thinking, design during this pivotal moment.
