Jair Bolsonaro, the former far-right president, is currently serving a 27-year sentence for his role in plotting the coup. His son, Eduardo, a former lawmaker, had relocated to the United States before his father's conviction, where he actively sought to build support for his father, particularly from the Trump administration.

Following Tuesday's conviction, Eduardo Bolsonaro issued a statement claiming he had not been properly notified about the court's legal process. He had previously told Reuters that his activities in the US were not intended to secure his father's acquittal, but rather to compel the Brazilian Supreme Court to hold officials accountable who, in his view, were not adhering to Brazil's constitution.
