India & France Forge Future: Innovation 2030, AI, & Economic Security Dialogue!

In a significant stride towards strengthening bilateral ties, India and France have adopted an ambitious ‘Innovation Roadmap 2030’ and established a dedicated ‘Dialogue on Economic Security’. These crucial agreements emerged from a high-level meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron, held in the picturesque French city of Nice on Sunday, June 14, 2026. The meeting took place during PM Modi’s visit for the Bharat Innovates technology conference.

The leaders underscored the pivotal role of innovation and technology in their partnership, aiming to provide a long-term direction for cooperation. A key outcome is the agreement to create a Joint India-France AI Working Group, designed to expand collaboration in the rapidly evolving field of Artificial Intelligence. Furthermore, the meeting saw the signing of 19 agreements between entities from both countries' innovation ecosystems, signaling a robust and practical commitment to shared technological advancement.

Economic cooperation was also at the forefront of discussions. Both nations called for the swift adoption of the India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA), which was signed earlier this year in February. To supercharge trade relations, a High-Level Mechanism is set to be established with the ambitious goal of doubling trade between India and France within the next five years. The dialogue extended to fostering cooperation in critical sectors such as Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs), rail, and aviation.

As part of the newly formed ‘Dialogue on Economic Security’, Prime Minister Modi and President Macron committed to enhancing supply chain resilience, with particular emphasis on securing critical minerals. This move highlights a shared understanding of global economic vulnerabilities and a proactive approach to safeguarding national interests.

The leaders also exchanged views on pressing global matters, including the complex situations in West Asia, specifically Iran and Gaza, and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. While the press release remained circumspect on these sensitive topics compared to previous joint statements, it confirmed their discussion on matters of global importance. This recent engagement builds upon the earlier decision this year to rename their partnership a ‘Special Global Strategic Partnership’, reflecting an elevated level of mutual commitment and cooperation.
