Navy Chief says INS Aridaman, India's third indigenous nuclear-powered submarine, will be commissioned soon as Project 75I advances and Rafale-M jets are set for 2028.
New Delhi, India is strengthening the naval component of its nuclear triad. Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi said the third indigenous nuclear-powered submarine, INS Aridaman, will be commissioned soon, with trials in their final stages. He noted that the force is focusing on boosting overall combat prowess as part of a broader push to expand India’s underwater capability.
The process to seal the proposed acquisition of six stealth submarines under Project 75 India is nearing completion, signaling a significant upgrade to the submarine fleet. In parallel, the Navy expects the first four of the 26 Rafale-M fighter jets to arrive in 2028, a key element of the carrier strike group and overall maritime deterrence. The ₹64,000 crore deal with France underscores New Delhi’s commitment to expanding both submarine and air assets to reinforce sea denial and projection capabilities.
Tripathi highlighted the Navy’s role during Operation Sindoor, saying its aggressive posturing and immediate actions helped deter adversaries and kept the Pakistan Navy close to its ports and Makran coast. He also noted that the operation has contributed to higher insurance costs for merchant ships traveling to Pakistan and has influenced shipping patterns in the region. The Admiral added that Operation Sindoor remains in progress, with the Navy maintaining high operational readiness, including sustained operations in the Western Arabian Sea over the past several months.
Overall, the remarks underscore a clear strategic objective: to advance India’s indigenous maritime technologies and extend its deterrence, while signaling resolve at a time of heightened regional sensitivities.
