Kerala CM Vijayan: Social Harmony Drives Inclusive Growth at Vision 2031
Kerala's social harmony and inclusive growth take center stage as CM Vijayan launches Vision 2031, outlining a knowledge-based economy and resilient future.
Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Sunday said the state's social harmony has been central to its development, and protecting it strengthens economic progress by fostering stability and trust. Vijayan spoke after inaugurating Vision 2031: Development and Democracy, an international seminar here.
He asserted that secularism is not an abstract concept in Kerala but a lived practice visible in schools, workplaces, and communities. The state's social harmony, he noted, has allowed people of different religions and communities to live together peacefully for generations.
Protecting that harmony, Vijayan said, strengthens economic progress because stability and mutual respect create confidence and trust. He highlighted Kerala's achievements across infrastructure, education, health, and industry, achieved despite fiscal constraints like borrowing restrictions and revenue centralisation, thanks to innovative financing mechanisms and careful fiscal management.
As Kerala approaches its 75th year, the goal is not merely to celebrate past achievements but to prepare for a future — a productive, knowledge-based economy; a society that is inclusive and just; a state resilient to climate challenges; and a democracy that values discussion and participation. The chief minister noted that Kerala's development story has long been shaped by public interventions, both from above and below, through land and social reforms and the expansion of education and health services.
The seminar welcomed scholars, public representatives, administrators, and experts from diverse fields, and drew international attention, with figures like Amartya Sen joining the Vision 2031 meet online to contribute to the dialogue.
