Trump Arrives in Ireland Amid Protests & Historic Security Operation
US President Trump lands in Ireland for engagements at his golf resort and meetings with leaders, including a vocal critic, all set against a backdrop of protests and the largest security operation ever by Irish police.
US President Donald Trump has touched down in Ireland this Saturday morning, arriving amidst what authorities describe as one of the largest security operations ever implemented by the Irish police service, An Garda Síochána. The visit is accompanied by a number of planned demonstrations protesting against Mr. Trump's presence.
During his trip, President Trump is scheduled to participate in various engagements, including events in Dublin, the Irish capital, and at his golf resort in Doonbeg, County Clare. His resort is notably hosting the Irish Open, adding a significant sporting dimension to the visit. Irish premier Micheál Martin expressed his anticipation of welcoming Mr.
Trump, looking forward to discussions on
many issues of mutual interest and reaffirming the strong economic, cultural and people-to-people ties between Ireland and the United States.
Martin also highlighted the timing, stating, “His visit comes during a remarkable sporting summer for Ireland, and the United States and this weekend’s Irish Open at Trump International Doonbeg will be a fitting conclusion to an outstanding season of sport, and I hope we will see an Irish winner lifting the trophy on Sunday.”
Among his key meetings, Mr. Trump is expected to meet President Catherine Connolly, a long-standing critic of the US president, at her official residence Áras an Uachtaráin in Dublin's Phoenix Park. This will be followed by an engagement with Taoiseach Martin at the nearby Farmleigh Estate.
The anticipation around the meeting with President Connolly is particularly high, given her past criticisms.
Eric Trump, the president's son, spoke on Friday about his father's approach to the visit. He stated that the US president is prepared to welcome anyone with open arms during the trip, but is equally ready to go head-to-head if necessary. Addressing how the meeting with Ms.
Connolly might unfold, Eric Trump remarked,
Honestly, I leave it to them. I have seen so much political nonsense over the last 12 years where one day two people hate each other and the next day the two people are hugging. What I'll say is my father is willing to open his arms to anyone, and he is also willing to go head to head with anyone.
