Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s highly anticipated political action film, "Jana Nayagan," is proving to be a box office juggernaut, shattering advance booking records even in the face of online piracy and an 'A' certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
According to data from trade tracker Sacnilk, the film has already sold a staggering 7.37 lakh tickets nationwide, grossing an impressive ₹16.78 crore in advance bookings across 9,566 shows. This remarkable performance underscores the immense popularity of Vijay, especially as this film marks his final cinematic outing before fully dedicating himself to politics.
While the response has been mixed in some parts of Tamil Nadu, cities like Chennai, Madurai, Tiruchi, and Coimbatore have reported exceptional demand. Cinema owners in these regions, such as P. Dinesh Kumar of Guru Theatre in Madurai, noted, "People in Madurai are doubly excited to watch the movie. They come to cinemas for the experience and the atmosphere, which cannot be replicated online." S. Kumar, Relationship Manager of Broadway Cinemas Coimbatore, echoed this, stating, "Jana Nayagan has generated extraordinary excitement among audiences."
Bookings have been largely driven by members of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), youngsters associated with Mr. Vijay’s dedicated fan club, and the Gen Z movie-goers. In a testament to the frenzy surrounding the film, "first show" tickets in certain pockets of the State were reportedly sold for as high as ₹500 to ₹700.
Film industry analyst Sreedhar Pillai predicts a "bumper opening" for the film, emphasizing its significance as Chief Minister Vijay’s last. However, he also highlighted a potential challenge: "The film has received an ‘A’ certificate from the CBFC. This means children will not be allowed to watch it. Mr. Vijay’s fan base has traditionally been children and families." Multiplexes, in particular, are known to strictly enforce these certification norms.
Directed by H. Vinoth, "Jana Nayagan" faced its share of hurdles, including censor delays, legal battles, and extensive plot reworking to resonate with local audiences and political themes. Despite these obstacles, and the pre-release online leak, the film's powerful storyline and Vijay's star power have ensured a monumental theatrical debut.
