Guwahati Horror: Husband Kills Wife, Stores Severed Head in Fridge

A gruesome discovery in Guwahati has shocked residents after the partially decomposed and headless body of a 25-year-old woman, Riya Talukdar, was found in her apartment in the Beltola area on Sunday night. Even more horrifying, her severed head, wrapped in a polythene bag, was discovered in the refrigerator. Reports also indicate her fingers were allegedly cut off.

The victim, who worked in a boutique, had been living in the apartment since her marriage in September 2025. Her husband, Ramanujan Goswami, a cab driver, has since been arrested after surrendering to the police.

The horrific crime came to light when neighbours reported a foul smell emanating from the couple's flat and alerted authorities.

Police, upon breaking the lock, made the grim discovery of Riya's body on the floor and her head in the fridge.

According to police officials investigating the case, the murder reportedly followed a heated argument between the couple. The husband confessed to frequent fights with his wife and alleged she was in an extramarital relationship. He claimed to have lost his temper during an altercation on September 3 and subsequently killed her.

A machete, believed to be the murder weapon, was recovered from the apartment.

Preliminary investigations suggest the crime occurred approximately 48 hours before the body was found.

Police have registered a case and sent the woman's body to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for an autopsy as they continue to gather evidence and examine Goswami's behavioural history. The community remains in shock over the brutal nature of the killing.
