A shocking incident in Siwan, Bihar, has ignited a fierce political debate after a video showing a policeman firing an AK-47 rifle during student protests went viral. The footage, which circulated widely, has drawn sharp condemnation from political leaders and sparked outrage across the nation.
Siwan Superintendent of Police, Puran Kumar Jha, confirmed that the policeman involved has been suspended, and a departmental inquiry has been launched. This swift action comes after at least three protesters sustained gunshot injuries during the demonstration. The injured were admitted to a private hospital in Patna, where their condition is reported to be stable, with one already discharged.
The incident quickly escalated into a political storm, reaching Parliament on Monday. Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, fiercely attacked the government, demanding an apology from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and immediate action against those responsible for the "attack" on students. In a post on X, Mr. Gandhi stated, "the entire system is downright murderous against students," expressing dismay over reports of AK-47s being used and hundreds of students arrested and booked under FIRs.
Mr. Gandhi challenged PM Modi's previous promises of no FIRs against students, highlighting what he called "deadly attacks and brutality" instead of promised relief. He drew parallels with the use of pellet guns against students in Delhi, asserting, "Whether it is Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar, or Delhi — the pattern is the same everywhere. This government is dishonest." He added that reform is "beyond its capability" and that it would use "every tactic to suppress the students’ voices."
Other prominent Congress leaders echoed Mr. Gandhi's sentiments. Congress general secretary K.C. Venugopal sought an explanation from Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding who authorized the use of such deadly weapons. Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra emphasized that "students are not terrorists," questioning the deployment of AK-47s against them. Manish Tewari, another Congress MP, labeled the actions against unarmed students as "barbaric, inhuman, and an atrocity." The incident underscores growing concerns over police conduct during protests and the government's response to student grievances.
