Bengaluru's bustling Purple Line Metro experienced significant disruption on Tuesday evening after a technical snag crippled a train at Cubbon Park Metro Station during peak commuting hours. The incident plunged thousands of office-goers into chaos, as services came to a halt on one of the city's busiest corridors, connecting Whitefield (Kadugodi) in east Bengaluru with Challaghatta in the southwest.
The breakdown led to immense crowding at key stations like Cubbon Park and MG Road, forcing frustrated commuters to seek alternative transport. While many scrambled for autos and app-based cabs, a more unusual sight emerged: several individuals were compelled to hitch rides on passing lorries and other private vehicles to reach their destinations, highlighting the severity of the transport crisis.
The incident quickly drew sharp criticism from political figures. Bengaluru Central MP Tejasvi Surya slammed the state government, stating that metro disruptions had become "alarmingly frequent" and arguing that each breakdown throws the city's entire transport network into disarray. His comments underscored growing public frustration over the reliability of the Namma Metro services.
In response to the emergency, Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) issued a statement on Wednesday, confirming that the technical issue at Cubbon Park Metro Station had been successfully rectified and that normal services on the Purple Line had resumed. Despite the quick resolution, the disruption sparked wider concerns about urban mobility.
Bengaluru Central MP PC Mohan also weighed in, remarking that the incident exposed significant shortcomings in the city's urban mobility planning.
